Finland’s Chaoszine caught up with Taiwan’s Chthonic at Formosa : Finland : Fest. 2025 to discuss the band’s 30-year career, new music, and Taiwanese influences.
On having new music in the works:
“We aim to have most of the new songs finished within the next, maybe, two years. We have a few songs and it doesn’t sound like the previous release. We just keep doing something revolutionary in our own point of view. We try to be different. We can still be us, but we try to tell the story in a differet way.”
Chthonic premiered the music video of its single “Pattonkan” on March 1, 2023 at Knotfest. “Pattonkan” was released on all digital platforms starting March 2. The official music video has won the Best Asia Pacific Music Video of Munich Music Video Awards.

Chthonic was formed in 1995 in Taipei. They have been called “the Black Sabbath of Asia.” Frontman Freddy Lim is notably active in the Taiwanese political scene and supports that country’s independence movement. He has been active in the Taiwan Association for Human Rights, Amnesty International (serving as President of that group’s Taiwan chapter from 2010 to 2014), and other non-governmental human rights organizations. In July 2025, Lim assumed the role of Taiwan’s representative in Finland. His appointment was seen as a strategic move, as Finland and Taiwan share common values such as democracy, human rights, and resistance to authoritarianism.
