Gary Blaylock, St. Louis Cardinal and Clarkton native recently passed. In honor of his legacy we present his biography narrative when he was inducted into the Dunklin County Hall of Honor.

Gary Blaylock was born on October 11, 1931, in Clarkton, Missouri, the son of Haran N. “Jack” Blaylock and Bessie Blaylock. He was raised on a small farm near the Campbell airport alongside his two sisters, Pat and Sharon. Farm life shaped his work ethic early, but it was clear that his talents reached far beyond the fields. After graduating from Clarkton High School in 1949, Gary’s athletic ability began opening doors that would carry him far from home.

The summer after graduation, he attended a St. Louis Cardinals tryout camp in St. Louis. His performance earned him a professional baseball contract, though he would not report until the spring of 1950. In the meantime, he attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri, on a basketball scholarship—a testament to his versatility as an athlete. When spring arrived, he left college to report to minor league training camp in Albany, Georgia, officially launching his professional baseball career.

Gary spent eight years working his way through the Cardinals’ minor league system, playing in Johnson City, Tennessee; Omaha, Nebraska; Columbus, Ohio; and Rochester, New York. During those years, he sharpened his skills not only across the United States but internationally, spending seven winters pitching in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. His persistence paid off when he was called up as a pitcher for the Cardinals in 1959. That same season, he was claimed on waivers by the New York Yankees and finished the year with the storied franchise.

He remained with the Yankees organization for several years, pitching for their Triple-A club in Richmond, Virginia, before transitioning into leadership roles. For six years, he managed minor league clubs in Kentucky, North Carolina, and New York, shaping young players and building winning teams.

In 1969, Gary resigned from the Yankees organization and joined the Kansas City Royals as a scout and talent evaluator. He spent years traveling the country evaluating high school and college prospects, while also managing rookie teams in Billings, Montana, and Sarasota, Florida. After serving two years as a minor league pitching coach, he was promoted to major league pitching coach for the Royals.

The pinnacle of his career came in 1985 when the Kansas City Royals defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series Championship. For Gary, who had once signed with the Cardinals as a hopeful young pitcher, the victory carried special meaning. He remained with the Royals two more seasons, concluding his major league coaching career in 1987. He later served as an advance scout for the Colorado Rockies and the Detroit Tigers before retiring from professional baseball.

Gary’s love story was as memorable as his baseball career. He and his wife, Joy, were married at home plate on the baseball field in Johnson City, Tennessee, in front of a crowd of 3,500 spectators—a fitting beginning for a life built around the game. Together they raised a son, Gary Jr., and two daughters, Debbie and Shelia, and were blessed with grandchildren Josh and Nichole and great-granddaughter Anna.

Though baseball carried the family to many different cities, they always considered Malden, Missouri, their true home. In retirement, Gary returned to his roots, maintaining the family farm, volunteering as an assistant coach for the Malden High School Green Wave baseball team, and enthusiastically supporting Green Wave athletics. He was also an active member of First Baptist Church in Malden, continuing to serve his community with the same dedication that had defined his life on and off the field.
