Clayface’s Robert Pattinson-Like Bat Symbol Gets Clarification From James Gunn

James Gunn has issued clarifications about the Bat symbol allegedly spotted on the set of the upcoming DCU feature Clayface. After a set photo featuring the symbol began to circulate online, fans started speculating about how it seemed similar to the one used by Robert Pattinson‘s titular character in 2022’s The Batman and whether this means Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga is becoming part of the DCU.

James Gunn comments on Clayface set photo’s Bat symbol

James Gunn recently took to Threads to respond to a query about the Clayface set photo with what appears to be the Bat symbol circulating online. Fans seem to believe that the symbol is the same as the one in The Batman.

When asked on Threads if the appearance of the Bat symbol means that the DCU and the Batman Epic Crime Saga are merging, Gunn responded, “Although the trash can is from the set I have a hard time believing the bat was put there by the art department, but if so it never came across my desk (I don’t have time to ok every piece of set dressing.)”

While Gunn confirmed that he never approved the Bat symbol to be placed on the trash can on the Clayface set, it seems that fans continue to hold hopes of seeing Pattinson’s iteration of the Caped Crusader in the DC Universe. Notably, The Batman and associated projects are part of the DC Elseworlds content label, which includes releases that are not part of the mainstream DCU.

Directed by James Watkins, Clayface will be the third entry in the DCU after Superman and the upcoming Supergirl. The plot will reportedly revolve around the eponymous member of the Batman rogue gallery. Clayface premieres in US theaters on September 11, 2026.

Meanwhile, The Batman 2 hits theaters on October 1, 2027. Gunn and his team haven’t made any announcement revealing who will play Batman in the DCU, though the project, The Brave and the Bold, is in development.
