COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) -A father-son team has opened a virtual golf facility that channels all concession profits toward providing water filters for families in western Kenya.
Doglegg Golf operates four rental bays where players can choose from more than 1,900 virtual golf courses. Randy and Kyler Patton created the business to address golf demand in the Bryan-College Station area while supporting international water access.
“We just felt like there was an opportunity to provide more access to golf,” Randy Patton said, citing limited public course options despite high demand from the student population.
Kenya mission honors family legacy
The business donates every concession dollar to Straw to Bread, which delivers resources to western Kenya communities. The Patton family has traveled to the region multiple times to provide clean water, health, education and more.
Randy Patton’s late father, Biff Patton, launched the water filter program in 2010. Working with Texas Baptist Men, he distributed Sawyer filters that locals now refer to as “Biff Water.”
“When you visit Western Kenya, you see that access to clean water and food and education and shelter is just not always the case,” Randy Patton said.
Fundraising targets May Kenya trip
The water filters cost $50 each and provide clean drinking water for families of 10 for up to 20 years. Randy Patton said concession sales from one or two days at Doglegg Golf can fund a filter that serves a Kenyan family for decades.
“We want to be successful and we want to make money, but we think that we can do good in the world while we’re doing that,” Kyler Patton said.
Doglegg Golf has set a goal to raise $30,000 from concession sales before the next Kenya trip in May.
