An American comedian had to pause his show mid-set at the weekend after an audience member suffered a heart attack.
Former America’s Got Talent contestant Drew Lynch was performing in Spokane, Washington, when a man aged 83 collapsed.
The 34-year-old stand-up comic noticed something was wrong and called out to the audience in panic, asking them, “Everything okay?” Earlier this year, health experts urged individuals to remain alert for symptoms of the “silent” heart attack.
As Drew’s audience responded, “no,” the comedian asked whether there was any medic in the room – and many offered to help the man, later identified by the comedian as Mr. Wende, by performing CPR.
A woman then confirmed she had started CPR but said she couldn’t feel a pulse at first as another woman offered to help too by being the “second.”
He continued, “Like, I know we’re here making jokes and doing a bunch of s–t. But you guys all really just came together in a really cool way dude. You saved that guys life man.
“I mean that was crazy. You guys worked together so fast. That was nuts man.”
After a man shouted that, “Spokane does care,” Drew said, “To just witness that, I mean – that was crazy.”
The comedian then joked, “I have literally the hardest job in the world now. And that’s mostly what this is about.”
After being handed a tissue by a woman, he added, “I’m dabbing my eyes, I’m like a widow at a funeral right now.”
He then urged people in the audience to “give a hand to the people that saved that guy’s life.”
Sharing a video of the incident on Instagram, the comedian wrote, “At a show this past weekend in Spokane, something happened that I will never forget.
“In the middle of my set, a man in the audience collapsed from a heart attack. What happened next was one of the most powerful examples of community and human connection I’ve ever seen.
“Without hesitation, people in the audience began taking turns performing CPR, clearing space for paramedics, and monitoring his vitals. He had no pulse for over 5 minutes.
“With the combined efforts of total strangers, and honestly, by what felt like a miracle that night, he was revived right there in the room.
“The entire audience came together in that moment – no egos, no identities, no division – just one goal: saving a life.
“The next day my funny friends @akeemthefunnyguy , @rachelafllejecomedy and I visited Mr. Wende in the hospital to finish the show for him. Getting to laugh and share stories with his family for hours in the hospital was the reminder I needed of why comedy is so needed- especially in times when the world feels so torn apart.
“HUGE thank you to the people of Spokane, the brave medical professionals, and the Wende family for bringing this man into my life and reminding me just how special community can be. #spokane.”
After visiting Mr. Wende at Sacred Heart Medical Center, Drew posted some photos while giving a “shout out to the city of Spokane, the medical professionals, and the Wende family for bringing this beautiful man into my life and reminding me how special community is.”
