Detroit Tigers 2026 Opening Day preview vs San Diego Padres

On “Days of Roar,” Kevin Acee – the Padres beat writer for The San Diego Union-Tribune – breaks down the opponent for the Tigers on 2026 Opening Day.

When the 2026 Detroit Tigers home season opens at Comerica Park on Friday, April 3, fans will find new eats and drinks, plus better values. This season, Ilitch Sports Entertainment is also planning premium giveaways on select weekends, themed celebrations and community events.

Fans can expect a twist on ballpark favorites, like the Tigers Tail footlong corn dog, and diverse local favorites, including pierogi nachos.

On Wednesday, March 25, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment unveiled details of the new food and beverage offerings for fans at Comerica Park.

It’s all part of the Tigers’ $200 million, multiyear investment in the facility that Ilitch Sports Entertainment promises to “enhance fan and player experiences.”

At the annual “What’s New” at the ballpark media event, the Tigers organization, along with food and beverage partner Delaware North Sportservice, hosted a food tasting, announced new and returning vendors, new merchandise, game day specials and unique food items.

The event took place in Comerica Park’s swanky Priority Club, which made its debut during the 2025 season.

Mark Szubeczak, executive chef of Comerica Park for Delaware North Sportservice, said he’s excited not only about the Tigers but this year’s food offerings.

“It’s going to be a great season, and we’re ready to go. We have a bunch of fun new items this year. We’ve been cooking and testing food,” he said.

As in years past, the organization is putting the spotlight on local restaurants in the city of Detroit.

For the 2026 season, fans can expect favorites from Bert’s Marketplace, Breadless, Fairway Packing Co., Green Dot Stables, Slows Bar-BQ and Taqueria El Rey.

Breadless, the Detroit-born sandwich shop that uses greens like Swiss chard in place of bread, is back for its full second season in section 140. New this year is the Breadless Sweet Heat Chicken Ranch sandwich, said Marc Howland, Breadless co-founder and CEO.

Fairway Packing Co. in Fraser is returning for the second year with its smashburgers, which proved to be a smash last year, and more items.

“The biggest problem (with the smashburgers) was the line was too long. Everybody wants the burgers game, after game,” Emmet Barrata said. “This year, we wanted to enhance the fan experience, so we added another stand in the outfield under the scoreboard where there is going to be a Fairway Packing Marketplace.”

At the marketplace, Barrata said, its smashburgers will be available, as well as a steak sandwich, created by Fairway chef Christina Virgadamo and Delaware North’s chef Szubeczak.

“They curated one of the best steak sandwiches you’re ever going to eat at a ballpark. It’s an exclusive cut of a New York Strip we call the peninsula strip that they’re going to make a great steak sandwich with and bistro steak frites,” Barrata said. “This is ballpark food at its finest. … Detroit … is a big steak-eating town. People love their prime beef, and we are getting it delivered to them here at the ballpark. “
