Amazon Prime Video’s highly anticipated Tomb Raider series is officially moving forward. According to Variety, production will start on Jan. 19, 2026. The project is the first live-action TV adaptation of the legendary Core Design video game franchise. Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner will lead the series as the iconic Lara Croft.
The series was greenlit in May 2024, with Turner’s casting first reported later that year. It is being spearheaded by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer, while Chad Hodge has joined as co-showrunner. Jonathan van Tulleken will direct and executive produce.
Turner follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, both of whom previously portrayed Croft on the big screen. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got,” Turner said. “They’re massive shoes to fill, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.”
Backed by Crystal Dynamics, Story Kitchen, Legendary Television, and Amazon MGM Studios, the series is part of a larger deal to expand the Tomb Raider universe across film and TV. Amazon’s head of global television called the heroine “one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time.” Amazon promises the new shoe will “honor legacy” while also delivering on “fresh adventures.”
