Lambchop’s newest song is the story of a family struggling through the Great Depression. You’re intrigued, aren’t you? You should be. For many years, sole permanent Lambchop member Kurt Wagner has brought tons of gravitas to his lush country-rock songs, so you already know you want to hear him use that voice on a subject that demands such gravitas.
Next month, Lambchop will release their new album Punching The Clown. Wagner and Fog’s Andrew Broder, a Lambchop collaborator since 2021, recorded the LP at Justin Vernon’s April Base studio. Vernon plays banjo on the record, and Gayngs frontman Ryan Olson produces. Lambchop have already shared the early tracks “Weakened” and “Stella,” and now they’ve released “The New World Wave,” their Great Depression song. Wagner gravely intones his elliptical character sketches over a delicately folksy soundscape and, eventually, a wave of choral voices. Hear it below.
