I find it interesting that sequels are being created many years – sometimes a generation of years, in this case – after the original has appeared on the big screen.
.I remember “The Devil Wears Prada,” but I had not seen the original for, well, 20 years. It came back to me right away as I watched “The Devil Wears Prada 2” because the sequel feels like a rehash of the original.
The cinematic band is back together, but not right away. Anne Hathaway’s Andy has become a journalist working in New York.At an awards banquet, she and other journalists around her receive an identical, unwelcome text: They all have lost their jobs.
This is the way the film begins, and I must tell you that this scene is dramatic, memorable and all-too-believable. I won’t name names but I have friends who have experienced this in real life.
Back to fashion Andy goes. Now Andy and Miranda (Meryl Streep, once again enjoyable as the demanding, highly unpleasant boss) end up working in the same building in a changing industry where the question is what billionaire will buy the Runway magazine.
That Miranda doesn’t remember Andie at all – “She was one of the Emilys,” reminds Nigel, once again played by the enjoyable Stanley Tucci.
A character really named Emily (Emily Blunt) is on hand as Miranda’s former assistant who now is dating a billionaire (Justin Theroux.)
Lots of ads appear throughout the glamor and glitz, from Diet Coke to Dior. In the same vein, lots of celebrity cameos flash by, too, with the likes of Tina Brown, the former editor of Vanity Fair, Donatella Versace, designer Marc Jacobs and, of course, Lady Gaga herself.
You’ll know where the movie is going right from the start. There are a few funny lines, but the two-hour running length makes the stretched plot feel wheezy toward the last 20 minutes.
If you must have another look, by all means enjoy yourself. Just don’t expect a sequel that’s, well, fashion-forward.
