A new proposed bill could give the Vestavia Hills City Council the authority to establish two additional entertainment districts within city limits.

In Alabama, entertainment districts are designated areas within a city where authorized businesses are permitted to sell alcoholic beverages for off-premises consumption, provided that the sale occurs within the boundaries of the entertainment district.

Currently, the City of Vestavia Hills has three entertainment districts:

  • Rocky Ridge
  • City Center (Highway 31)
  • Cahaba Heights

On January 9, Representative Jim Carns (R, Jefferson County, Shelby County) introduced House Bill 144 into the Alabama Legislature. Should the bill be approved at the state level, it would allow the City Council of Vestavia Hills to establish up to five total entertainment districts within the city.

In order to become law, House Bill 144 must first be formally introduced in the Alabama House of Representatives, read, proceed through committee review and pass a vote by the full House before moving on to the Senate for a similar process. Finally, the bill will need to be signed into law by the Governor.

If approved, the Vestavia Hills City Council would decide which areas would become the city’s two new entertainment districts.

Do you think Vestavia Hills needs five entertainment districts? If so, where would you put them? Tag us @bhamnow to let us know!
