Country music icon Crystal Gayle recently drew attention when she announced that she was being forced to pull out of an overseas gig due to an injury, and it doesn’t sound like it was a fun situation for her at all.

Gayle, 75, was slated to perform at the Your Roots are Showing conference in Belfast on Jan. 13, but she said announced on social media that a torn meniscus in her knee would prevent her from traveling to the show.

She recently opened up more about the ordeal in an interview with People Magazine admitting to the outlet that the situation has taken “a toll” on her “mentally and physically.”

“These things happen and you don’t want it to,” the singer told People. “I’ve never had anything like this … mentally, you’re going through a ‘why me?’”

Gayle told People she was currently looking at different treatment plans and surgery options for her injury.

“I can go and sit and sing, but it does put you in a difference place mentally … it is harder to get around, but hopefully in the near future, it won’t be,” she said.

So, it does look like Gayle is intent on getting back in shape to get onstage, but she also took time to put her career in perspective with People.

“I’ve had a great career,” she said. “I’ve had so many wonderful people behind me, behind the scenes, as well as people coming to the concerts. And I feel very lucky.”

Gayle first revealed her injury with a social media post ahead of her scheduled date in Belfast.

“I was truly looking forward to coming to Belfast — singing a few songs, sharing some stories, and spending some time with everyone,” Gayle said in a press release per Taste of Country.

“But my doctor tells me this knee isn’t ready for those overseas miles just yet,” she continued. “I promise I’ll be ‘Ready for the Times to Get Better’ — just not at 30,000 feet next week. Thank you for your understanding, and I hope we can make it up to you soon.”

Gayle, who is the sister of another country music legend, Loretta Lynn, was one of country music’s most successful singers through the 1970s and 1980s, per Taste of Country.

She is best known for her hits “I’ll Get Over Your,” “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” “Why Have You Left The One You Left Me For,” and her last big hit, “Straight to the Heart,” which it No. 1 on the charts in 1986.
