Jelly Roll got religious as he was accepting the award for Best Contemporary Country Album at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards.
“Jesus is for everybody,” said Jelly Roll, who won for his album “Beautifully Broken.” “Jesus is not owned by one political party. Jesus is not owned by no music label.”
Jelly Roll, who also won for Best Country Duo/Group Performance earlier in the night, started off his acceptance speech by thanking his “beautiful wife,” podcaster Bunnie Xo.
“I want to thank my beautiful wife,” Jelly Roll said. “I would have never changed my life without you. I would have ended up dead or in jail. I would have killed myself if it wasn’t for you and Jesus. I thank you for that.”
He then thanked his record label and country radio.
“There was a time in my life, y’all, that I was broken. That’s why I wrote this album. I didn’t think I had a chance, y’all. There were days that I thought the darkest things. I was a horrible human. There was a moment in my life that all I had was a Bible this big,” Jelly Roll said, while holding up a small Bible, “and a radio the same size in a 6-by-8-foot cell, and I believed that those two things could change my life. I believed that music had the power to change my life and God had the power to change my life, and I want to tell y’all right now, Jesus is for everybody. Jesus is not owned by one political party. Jesus is not owned by no music label.”
Throughout his teens and early 20s, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, was arrested multiple times for charges including aggravated robbery and possession with intent to sell. He earned his GED at age 23 while in jail.
Jelly Roll turned to religion a few years ago after his daughter asked about getting baptized in the Christian church.
While promoting “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” Jelly Roll’s duet with Christian singer Brandon Lake, Jelly Roll said that while he’s been called a “lukewarm” Christian or a “cussing Christian,” faith has changed his life.
“I might wear it a little different than other people, I might say things that other Christians don’t think are right to say, but ultimately, I have a heart for God and I have a heart for Jesus,” Jelly Roll said.
