1980 spawned one of the most famous fashion campaigns of all time.
Starring actress Brooke Shields, Calvin Klein launched a series of print and television ads promoting the brand’s classic denim. Today, the vintage ads are widely considered iconic, but at the time, they ignited a fury that got them banned by some TV stations.
Here’s why: Shields was just 15 and delivering lines like, “You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.” And, per The Hollywood Reporter, “Genes are fundamental in determining the characteristics of an individual and passing on these characteristics to succeeding generations.”
In an interview with People magazine in 2023, Klein, now 83, reminisced about his “fresh” and “sexy” ’80s It girl, saying, “When we first met, she was a teenager, two years after filming Pretty Baby. We were launching jeans and wanted to say something new. Brooke was the perfect fit — young and confident with a modern spirit.”
Since Shields’ collaboration with the brand, several Hollywood stars have carried the torch, with the ads getting even skimpier over the years.
Per WWD, models, movie stars, and musicians including Cooper Koch, Bad Bunny, Kate Moss, Jungkook, Mark Wahlberg, and Kendall Jenner have all modeled the brand’s classic denim and stripped down to their Calvin Klein-banded underwear in the name of fashion.
Today, there’s another stunner to add to the list. The latest star to come between Shields and her Calvins is Dakota Johnson. Daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, the Fifty Shades of Grey actress strips down to nearly nuthin’ in the latest CK ads.
In addition to glossy images featuring the brunette topless while sporting belted dark and light-colored washes, the brand released a video.
In the footage, which also features the song “Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress),” by The Hollies, Johnson plays pool in only banded black underwear and stilettos, her long dark strands covering her bubbies and torso. Later, she’s lounging pool-side in a bra, no undies, before she boogies down on a couch in baggy distressed denim, this time with no top.
“And that line, that last line, God, it’s so magic,” she says toward the end, while tracing the curvature and lines of her own figure. “Ah, I guess she’s my kind of woman. Do you have your Calvins on?”
