Need some help figuring out your next read? David Archuleta has a few ideas.
In an interview with Page Six published on Tuesday, Feb. 17, the American Idol alum — whose autobiography, Devout: Losing My Faith to Find Myself, is out now — revealed six of his must-read titles.
“I like books that get me to reflect on life, to feel insightful and introspective, and motivating to find purpose in life,” the 35-year-old told the outlet, adding that he enjoys curling up on the couch with one of his favorite reads, or taking a book “somewhere outside, like the park or the beach.”

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
The “Crush” singer said that Miller’s 2012 debut novel is a “recent read” for him.
“I was given it by a friend and fell in love with the mythological escape it gives, while bringing you into a beautiful, intimate relationship between two humans,” he said of this reimagining of the Trojan War. “It’s the kind of dynamic in love that I daydream of.”

The former Masked Singer contestant also named The Four Agreements, describing the self-improvement text based on ancient Toltec wisdom as “a book that is so short and simple and gives great advice.”
“Unfortunately, I have such bad memory for retaining the information that I read. Luckily, since this is an easy read, it is a book I can always go back to and never tire of,” he said of the 1997 book. “The advice is applicable anytime I choose to pick it up.”

Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho
Archuleta told the outlet that Coelho is his “favorite author.”
“His ability to tell a story that makes you feel a part of the moment while it’s happening, always inviting curiosity and delving into more serious topics like mental health in this book, was very relatable to me,” he continued.
Veronika Decides to Die follows a 24-year-old Slovenian woman who’s admitted to a mental health facility after a suicide attempt and finds a new zest for life.
“I love that it also touched on difficulty with physical touch and intimacy for one of the characters,” Archuleta added, “as that is something I can relate to and discuss in my book as well.”

Simon & Schuster
Another on his list? Jennette McCurdy‘s viral autobiography, I’m Glad My Mom Died.
“Jennette’s ability to be raw, real, and straightforward with her story was inspiring for me,” said the GLAAD Award winner. “Having some similarities with our Mormon upbringings, challenges with a controlling parent, and learning to find your own voice after unhealthily attaching yourself to someone else for so long.”
“It was a story where I felt seen and also felt encouraged to tell my own story,” he continued, revealing that “Jennette encouraged me, during a chat we had, to write my book and asked if I would be up to her introducing me to her team that she wrote her first book with. So Jennette and her book have influenced me in multiple ways and I’m truly grateful.”

Robert Ascroft
In his second memoir, following 2010’s Chords of Strength, Archuleta “takes you inside his deeply personal journey as a closeted Mormon teen turned international pop star, torn between faith, fame, and identity,” according to an official synopsis.
“I like to be raw, observant, introspective, and hopeful,” he said. “I wanted to keep these elements in telling my story, and since this is the book I’ve spent the most time with over the last three years, I put it on this list.”

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
From another one of his favorite authors comes what Archuleta described as an “impressive” and “satisfying” read.
The famous 1988 novel follows a shepherd boy on a quest for treasure across North Africa, which becomes a journey of self-discovery.
“I love the curiosity it brings, the adventure, and the exploration of oneself as well as of the world around you,” Archuleta noted.
