The King asked the former England football star: “Does it smell?” Sir David replied: “It smells amazing, amazing.”
He then added jokingly, according to The Telegraph: “Not as good as yours,” which prompted chuckles from the King.
The duo were joined by broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh, Melissa Simpson, Head of Horticulture at Highgrove Gardens and garden designer Frances Tophill, who all form part of the team behind The RHS and The King’s Foundation Curious Garden.
The King’s Foundation garden aims to encourage the nation to discover the joy of curiosity in gardening and the vital contribution plants make to the health of people, places and the planet.
During their meeting, Sir David told the King about his special rose, which his teenage daughter Harper Beckham, 14, had named after him for his 50th birthday.
The King asked him “What colour is that?” to which the former footballer said: “White. My daughter actually, it was a gift from her for my 50th birthday last year.”
“She organised that. She chose it, so very special.”
Meanwhile, the King’s Rose is a pink and white striped English shrub rose and was introduced at Chelsea last year.
This year’s garden features an oak building representing a ‘museum of curiosities’, seven raised plant beds as a nod to Sir David and the Manchester United and England National Team number 7 shirt he wore, Delphiniums grown by the RHS at its Wisley Garden, celebrating the King being Patron of the Delphinium Society and their prominence at his Highgrove garden, an Artist’s Easel created by The King’s Foundation’s Snowdon School of Furniture and across the garden finesse and flowers and good horticulture for Alan Titchmarsh.
According to reports, it was agreed that the garden will this year host a beehive, inspired by the King and Sir David’s shared enthusiasm for beekeeping.
