David Harbour is opening up about the… unique relationship between the New Avengers and the original team in Doomsday.
The actor, who portrays Alexei Shostakov/the Red Guardian, reveals that the similar-sounding — yet legally distinct! — superhero squads will have very different viewpoints in the upcoming film.
“I mean, there’s trouble for sure,” Harbour tells Gerrad Hall at EW’s 2026 San Diego Comic-Con studio on Saturday night. “We definitely approach things differently than those guys and we have different ideas about how to do things.”

He continues, “I mean, clearly, we are right, but not everyone agrees with us.”
Lewis Pullman, a fellow member of the New Avengers, agrees with his Thunderbolts costar’s assessment. “Yeah, no, well said,” the actor, who plays Bob Reynolds aka the Void/Sentry, adds. “It’s definitely kind of a… unexpected route to get to the same destination, but it’s extra fun.”
The Thunderbolts — which is comprised of Bucky Barnes/the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) — were rebranded as the New Avengers after saving New York City in their standalone film.
The Avengers, meanwhile, have largely gone their separate ways after Endgame. That being said, Sam Wilson/Captain America (Anthony Mackie) has revealed his plan to create a new team moving forward.

There is one person who may have the power to bridge the gap between these two teams’ very different energies: Bucky Barnes. After all, he’s close friends with Sam and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and previously saved the universe with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Shuri (Letitia Wright). Which is all really to say: We just know Bucky Barnes will be seriously stressed out in the future.
The New Avengers and the original team are just two of the superhero squads in Doomsday. The X-Men from the original Fox trilogy, as well as the Fantastic Four, will also make appearances in the superhero sequel. As for how they’ll all get along together? Well, if they want to save the world from Victor Von Doom (Robert Downey Jr.), they’ve gotta get on the same page quick.
Doomsday explodes into theaters on Dec. 18.
