The “BREAKS SILENCE” headlines have officially come for David Harbour, who recently kinda sorta said something about ex-wife Lily Allen’s damning album West End Girl. Because in Hollywood, celebrities don’t just “speak” like us regular people; instead, they “break their silence,” which is so much more dramatic and fun.
In October, Allen released her album West End Girl, and in the span of 45 minutes and 14 songs, left Harbour and his publicists picking up the rubble of a PR nightmare. Even through multiple press tours for major projects like Stranger Things and DTF St. Louis, Harbour remained silent on the damning accusations thrown around in Allen’s lyrics. But on Wednesday, Variety published an interview with Harbour in which he shared his “first public comments about the album,” per the outlet. After six months of silence, Harbour has come up with a pretty solid PR strategy: Say something, but also say nothing. It’s disappointing, but it can’t fail!
To give you a little rundown on some of the “tell-all” lyrics featured on West End Girl:
“I can’t trust anything that comes out of your mouth /I’m not convinced that he didn’t f*ck you in our house” (“Madeline”)
“I found a shoebox full of handwritten letters / From brokenhearted women wishing you could have been better / Sheets pulled off the bed, they’re strewn all on the floor / Long black hair, probably from the night before” (“Pussy Palace”)
“Duane Reade bag with the handles tied / Sex toys, butt plugs, lube inside /Hundreds of Trojans, you’re so fucking broken/ How’d I get caught up in your double life? (“Pussy Palace”)
“Did you fall in love with someone who isn’t me? Why arе we here talking about vasеctomies? Did you get someone pregnant? Someone who isn’t me?” (”Just Enough”)
“And who the fuck is Madeline?” (“Tennis”)
And more. To recap, Allen revealed that at some point during her four-year marriage to Harbour, the two had a complicated open relationship in which some lines got blurry. A recurring character on the album is Madeline, a pseudonym for the woman with whom Harbour may or may not have had a more serious love affair and broken the terms of said complicated non-monogamous agreement. So how did David respond to his ex-wife telling the whole world that he had affairs and was a sex addict? He didn’t until Wednesday; hence, silence = broken.
“It was weird,” Harbour told Variety, “I do believe that it is the privilege of every artist to use their experience to create art, and so I respect her for doing that.”
“I can’t really say that much more,” he added, “because it’s my private life. In spite of the fact that a lot of people don’t allow me a private life — I value it. And I also value the lives of the people that I interact with privately. I just won’t speak about that.” The identity of “Madeline” wasn’t a mystery for long. In December, a woman named Natalie Trippet revealed herself and shared her side of things, including that she was also upset about the narrative Allen told about her and Harbour’s alleged affair. (And the dramatized reading of her alleged texts to Allen. re: “Madeline”)
“Stories are complex,” Harbour said, “and that’s why I say I respect her creation of art to channel her experience. It wasn’t my experience.” It wasn’t his experience. Yup, that’s it. Back to silence, or talking about Millie Bobby Brown or whatever. That’s all she wrote. (Until the next album…)
