Speaking with Soap Opera Digest, Rikaart confirmed that there had been “murmurings for quite some time” before O’Brien reprised her role, and he was “absolutely thrilled” to reunite with her. He recalled their on-screen reunion moment, noting that Leo instantly recognized Gwen’s voice without turning around, a sign of the emotional history between the characters.
Their characters’ friendship ended when Gwen discovered her husband Dimitri was cheating with Leo. After Dimitri’s departure, Rikaart explained that the storyline left room for reconciliation. He revealed that scripts have included Leo leaving Gwen voicemails, saying lines like, “I know you’re probably not going to listen to this, but…” which highlighted Leo’s regret. Rikaart added, “I think he definitely feels regret and would love nothing more than for their friendship to reignite, but certainly that’s not where Gwen is at right now.”
Rikaart also acknowledged the uphill challenge for Leo, stressing Gwen’s resistance. He said, “On the one hand, I would like [them to make up]. On the other hand, I’d like to see it earned, and it feels like that’s the direction it’s going. Gwen’s certainly not quick to want to forgive and forget.” He pointed out that Leo’s therapy sessions with Marlena could give him tools for reconciliation, though Gwen remains guarded.
Emily O’Brien expressed enthusiasm about returning to scenes with Rikaart. “Of course I am! I mean, he’s just a bag of giggles all the time! We can barely get through our scenes sometimes,” she shared, recalling their playful energy.
O’Brien added that despite Gwen’s resentment, the bond between Leo and Gwen remains vital. “Ultimately, I think they will come to realize that it’s much more important to set their differences aside because at the end of the day, they’re like puzzle pieces. They’re ‘Gweo!’”
