Actress Suzanne Rogers, best known for playing Maggie Horton on the daytime soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” announced she was been diagnosed with Stage II colorectal cancer earlier this year.

In an interview with TV Insider, Rogers, 82, said that while she had been getting colonoscopies regularly, she recently felt that “something wasn’t right” with her body.

After making a doctor’s appointment and having various. tests done, she got the bad news from her doctor.

“He said, ‘You have cancer and you have to start treatment,’” Rogers said. “It was all a shock. I mean, I think I was in a shock for several days because I take pretty good care of myself. But he said, ‘It’s a good thing you caught it in time.’”

She said she finished her work on “Days” on June 13 and began treatment three days later.

“It was radiation every day and chemo every day for six weeks and it was tough,” she said. “It was tough knowing you had to do it five days a week and then you had off Saturday and Sunday. I thoroughly enjoyed my weekends because I didn’t have to go to and see a doctor. I was so tired of seeing doctors.”

Rogers said that cast members and show producers offered help and support during that time, especially co-star Linsey Godfrey, who would accompany Rogers to her chemo appointments.

TV Insider reported Rogers, who has played Maggie Horton on the show for over 50 years, completed treatment on July 31 and will be heading back to the “Days” set soon to resume shooting.

“The biggest thing is that I was tired because that’s not like me,” she said. “I have a lot of energy all the time, so it really kind of shook me thinking, ‘Am I going to get my energy back?’ And it seems like it’s coming back. It’s not 100% yet, but I feel better. Today I feel really good, and that’s happening more and more than the other way around, so I’m really happy about that.”
