Demi Moore has said she believes Tom Cruise may have been “embarrassed” by her pregnancy while they were working on A Few Good Men together.
The 62-year-old actress was nearly eight months pregnant with Scout Willis, her second child with Bruce Willis, when she began working on the 1992 film, directed by Rob Reiner.
She played Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway in the film, while Tom, 63, starred as Lt. Daniel Kaffee.
During a Q&A with Jia Tolentino at the New Yorker Festival on October 25, Demi said she she thought Tom was “quite embarrassed” and claimed things were “awkward” on the set.
She recalled, “I think Tom was quite embarrassed. I actually felt okay about it. I was moving around, though, right? But I could tell he felt that it was a bit awkward.”
Demi, who also shares daughters Rumer and Tallulah Willis with her ex-husband Bruce, added she thinks one of the reasons Tom may have been uncomfortable was the fact that at the time, not many Hollywood stars were having children, as many women felt the pressure to choose between pursuing a career and being mothers.
She said, “It’s one of the many things, for me, that I just felt didn’t make sense. And so I challenged that to say, you know, ‘Why not? Why can’t you have both?’
“But with that, I think, came a lot of pressure I put on myself to, in a sense, prove that it was possible.”
The actress added she became “a bit of an overachiever” in proving that she could manage motherhood with her career.
She explained, “I look back at that time now, and I go, ‘What the f— was I thinking?’ And what was I even trying to prove?
“But it wasn’t as supported as it is today. You know, to be breastfeeding and then blocking and rehearsing a scene.”
Earlier this year, Demi missed out on her highly-anticipated first Best Actress award at the Oscars despite winning the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, and SAG Award for her work in The Substance.
After winning the Golden Globe in the same category, the star “was really hopeful that she had secured this win,” an insider told Page Six.
“Demi is taking this loss very hard because she felt like this was finally her chance to take home an Academy Award,” they added.
