Wilmington horror director Ti West and actor Johnny Depp are reportedly set to team up for “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” a makeover of the famous Charles Dickens tale.
Deadline reported that Paramount is nearing an agreement to move forward with “Ebenezer.” West is set to direct and Depp would star as Ebenezer Scrooge in the movie the studio has set for Nov. 13, 2026.
Nathaniel Halpern wrote the script and Emma Watts is the producer, per the report.
What do we know about ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol?’
Johnny Depp is reportedly set to star as Scrooge in ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,’ a film director by Wilmnigton’s Ti West, which is slated for late 2026.
Although details about “Ebenezer” remain scarce, certain connections are easy to make, especially because West is best known for directing horror films.
His “2024” horror film “MaXXXine” featured a star-studded cast that included Giancarlo Esposito, Halsey, Kevin Bacon and Mia Goth.

Given the director’s background, “Ebenezer” may go deep on the story’s darkest themes, while emphasizing the supernatural elements that are a major part of “A Christmas Carol.”
For anyone who isn’t familiar with Dickens’ timeless story, ” A Christmas Carol” follows a cold-hearted old man named Ebenezer Scrooge who can’t buy joy, despite being wealthy. He experiences a change of heart after supernatural visits from an old business partner and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come.
With Depp starring as Scrooge, he’ll probably inject his signature humor into the film, even if it’s subtle.
Why Johnny Depp & Ti West make sense together
Due to Depp’s history of collaborations with Tim Burton — a filmmaker praised for his gothic and whimsical style — it’s understandable that Depp would be drawn to West, a hot rising filmmaker known for his dark cinematic style.
At its heart, “A Christmas Carol” is a tale of redemption that leaves audiences with a sense of hope. While “Ebenezer” may ultimately aim for a similar emotional experience at the end, it’s unclear what path the movie will take at this point.

Ti West struck gold with ‘MaXXXine’ in 2024
Wilmington director Ti West (pictured) is reportedly set to direct ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ starring Johnny Depp, which is slated for late 2026.
“Ebenezer” is slated to be one of Depp’s first big roles since his defamation-lawsuit win in 2022.
Meanwhile, West had a huge year when “MaXXXine” hit theaters last summer. It marked the biggest film of his career yet. The Wilmington director’s flick wrapped up the third in the horror trilogy, which also features the movies “Pearl” and “X.”
If all goes well, “Ebenezer” should eclipse “MaXXXine” and introduce West’s work to a wider audience of people outside the horror genre.
“Ebenezer” is the second “Christmas Carol” film announced this year as Warner Bros. plans an adaptation helmed by Robert Eggers, with Willem Dafoe as a top choice to play Scrooge, according to a June report from Deadline.
