It’s been a couple years since Dent May’s seventh LP What’s For Breakfast?, and now the prolific psych-pop polymath is announcing its followup The Big One. The title track is out today, and it’s an exquisite, existential daydream.
“The album and song title ‘The Big One’ references the long-anticipated natural disaster that may or may not be coming to destroy the world, but the song is about any personal life-altering moment that shakes you out of your comfort zone,” May explains. “The biggest of the big ones is, of course, death, but life is full of many smaller moments when we are forced to confront the temporary nature of our lives. Ultimately, the song asks: in the face of knowing that everything will come crashing down sooner or later, are you going to be ok?”
Nevertheless, the LA-based artist sings of catastrophe with an aching fondness that lends the song an ironic uplifting beauty. The opening lyrics on their own are a gut-punch: “Born with a broken heart/ Sit around all day waiting for my life to start.” But May’s delivery is so gorgeous that it softens the blow.
