Love and romance are complicated propositions, and Dewey Huang has used his new single “With a Touch” to explore their complexities. The song comes today with the premiere of its accompanying music video. It is a nice, laid-back clip that helps lend perspective to the emotional complexity of the song. Joining Huang on “With a Touch” is the exceptional vocalist Doria Li, who really makes you feel every word with her soulful performance. The video also includes the lyrics, which, in combination with the video, really help to emphasize the strength and weight of Li’s words. The song is a nice example of the modern neo-soul and R&B sound that Huang specializes in. What better way to experience Valentine’s Day than with Huang and Li’s delicate new single, touching on the different sides of intimacy and vulnerability.
Commenting on “With a Touch,” Huang states:
“The most valuable lesson I’ve carried with me from my culture’s rich history of literature is to preserve beauty via constraint. It’s about ‘less is more,’ but only when there’s ‘enough’ intention and detail to invite the listener’s imagination in – and in that case, you really just wanna make room for that, and imagination can go a long way. When you listen to ‘With A Touch,’ that philosophy shows up in the songwriting, the guitar parts, and the production as a whole. A big part of finishing the record was learning what to remove — making space so the emotion could breathe and the listener could meet the song halfway.”
Huang is a New York City-based singer, songwriter, producer, live music arranger, and bandleader. He studied music, holding a master’s degree from New York University, where he honed his skills as a composer and arranger. Typically, Huang’s songs blend Brazilian jazz influences with modern Neo-soul and R&B. With groove-driven arrangements, his music is heavily defined by its harmonic sophistication. His goal is to make songs that are more about the feel and emotion, rather than excessive arrangements or over-the-top production. Huang is very active within New York’s live music scene as a band leader and arranger. He regularly leads ensembles for other artists across a multitude of genres. He has arranged projects associated with the Asian Music Industry Festival and has also bandled and performed at The Bitter End and Nublu.
Despite his impressive technical skills, Huang presents himself well as an artist who will also make you feel something.
