Diane Keaton’s cause of death has been revealed.
On Thursday, October 15 the Annie Hall star’s family confirmed that Keaton died of pneumonia.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” her family told People in a statement published on Thursday, October 15.
“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community,” the family continued in the statement. “So any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
As Star previously reported, the Godfather actress died earlier this week at the age of 79.
Following news of her passing, countless Hollywood stars paid tribute to Keaton.
“Diane, we aren’t ready to lose you,” her First Wives costar Goldie Hawn began wrote on Instagram. “You’ve left us with a trail of fairy dust, filled with particles of light and memories beyond imagination.”
Steve Martin — who starred alongside the Oscar-winning actress in Father of the Bride and its sequel Father of the Bride Part II — took to social media to share a look back on the very first project that brought them together.
“This playbill is from a 1964 college production of Carousel. Diane ‘Hall’ (Keaton) is the lead; I’m a stage hand,” he captioned an Instagram photo featuring an old photo of the program from their days as acting students at Santa Ana College in Southern California.
Keaton’s ex, Woody Allen, wrote a tribute published in The Free Press on Sunday on October 12, per the Mirror.
“A few days ago, the world was a place that included Diane Keaton. Now it’s a world that does not,” he penned. “Hence, it’s a drearier world. Still, there are her movies. And her great laugh still echoes in my head.”
Keaton is survived by her two children, son Duke, 25, and daughter Dexter, 29.
