Diane Keaton died Saturday at the age of 79, and while no official cause of death has been named, several reports indicate the iconic actress may have been dealing with health issues in the months leading up to her passing.
On Saturday, a report emerged claiming Keaton’s health “declined very suddenly” over the last few months. Now, one of the Annie Hall star’s close friends has told people she was alarmed by Keaton’s recent appearance.
Songwriter Carole Bayer Sager said she visited Keaton less than a month ago and described the Academy Award winner as “very thin.”
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager told PEOPLE. “She had lost so much weight.”
Sager added that she hadn’t seen Keaton for a while since the acclaimed performer was forced to spend time in Palm Springs after he house was damaged by the California wildfires earlier this year.
When the longtime friends finally reunited, Sager says she was “stunned” by Keaton’s weight loss.
Keaton’s family has “asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” according to a statement delivered to PEOPLE.
Friends, fellow performers honor Keaton’s legacy
Keaton was a beloved actress, best known for her roles in The Godfather trilogy, Father of the Bride, Manhattan, The First Wives Club and Crimes of the Heart.
While she never married, Keaton did have two adopted adult children, as well as countless friends and acting contemporaries whose lives she touched.
Many of these people memorialized Keaton publicly after finding out about her passing.
“The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me,” actress Bette Midler wrote on Instagram. “She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”
““How do we say goodbye? What words can come to mind when your heart is broken? You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to “shut up” honey. There was, and will be, no one like you,” actress Goldie Hawn added.
“One of the greatest film actors ever. An icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person,” wrote actor and comedian Ben Stiller on X/Twitter.
“Diane was a true artist – tremendously gifted and uniquely talented in so many disciplines yet also modest and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her terribly,” said actress Candice Bergen in a statement.
Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Keaton in The Godfather, called the Los Angeles native “endlessly intelligent, so beautiful” and added that “everything about Diane was creativity personified.”
