Disney/Fox announced a surprise sequel to 2007’s The Simpsons Movie on Monday, set to be released roughly 20 years to the day that the original film hit theaters.
As the show has strangely been capable of doing over the years with history, did The Simpsons actually predict when the sequel would come out in some sort of manifesting-your-own-destiny sort of way?
Well… kinda?

During the season 19 premiere episode “He Loves to Fly and He D’ohs” in September 2007, Bart is shown writing “I will not wait 20 years to make another movie” during the recurring chalkboard gag at Springfield Elementary.
That joke was made just a couple of months after The Simpsons Movie hit theaters on July 27, 2007. The next film will hit theaters right on July 23, 2027. In the words of Comic Book Guy, coincidence? I think not.
We’re sure Simpsons heads will remember that chalkboard gag and see this release date announcement as a self-fulfilling prophesy. Technically, the show indeed kept its promise not to wait 20 years to make another movie since production, of course, began well before the 2027 release date. The prediction (if you call it that) was true.
Another example of The Simpsons guessing history? We guess so, even if this instance is the show calling its own shot and being very capable of guiding the ball to the hoop.
