Ready for an old-fashioned movie movie? That’s what writer-director Derek Cianfrance set out to deliver with Roofman, so much so that the original title of the film was A Movie Movie.
That’s one of many revelations that the auteur behind Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines drops during an Awards Magnet interview about his latest, and most commercial, film. Not for nothing, but Jerry Maguire was also a major Oscar contender back in the day, scoring nominations for Best Picture as well as Best Actor for Tom Cruise. The industry, and the awards race, has changed a lot since then, making Roofman an interesting test case for how voters will respond to a well-crafted studio vehicle — one that offers Channing Tatum a Cruise-like star turn. Gold Derby experts agree that Tatum seems destined for a Best Comedy/Musical Actor nod at the Golden Globes… and has a dark horse shot at an Oscar nod as well.
