Dutton Ranch is no longer just a figment of our far-fetched television hopes and dreams. The Yellowstone spin-off is officially on its way, even if the official premiere date remains up in the air. And if the recent SXSW Dutton Ranch brand messaging has any indication of what fans should expect, it’s bound to be just as fiery and fierce as you’d expect a Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) spin-off to be. What’s got fans particularly thrilled for the upcoming series, though, isn’t just the sizzling publicity; it’s the fact that, according to director Greg Yaitanes, the spinoff will feel like Yellowstone Season 6.
In an interview with Collider, Greg, who also directed two episodes of Marshals, revealed what it’s been like to enter the Yellowstone universe as a director.
“I was halfway through shooting on Marshals, and Glasser was like, ‘Hey, you’ve done the down and dirty, scrappy version of Yellowstone. Come do our other show,’” Greg shared in the interview. “That was a completely different, but equally rewarding experience. I loved Kelly and Cole and Annette [Bening] and Ed [Harris] and everybody. That cast is just so terrific.”
Where Marshals is a hard-hitting, neo-Western take on the fan-favorite primetime police procedural, Greg says that Dutton Ranch is “much more of a drama and a soap. It has the best parts of what I loved about Yellowstone.”
And that seems to be the consensus across the board from folks who have actually worked on the series. “A lot of the people involved with Dutton Ranch really felt like they were making Yellowstone Season 6,” Greg revealed. “Marshals is much more genre and guns-forward, and those kinds of cool things.”
The way Greg sees it, the common ground between the two spin-offs is ranch life. Both series feature scenes on the ranch, while ultimately showcasing how each of the Dutton siblings is nurturing their family history alongside navigating their grief and life post-tragedy. Because of this, it’s not out of the question that a crossover could happen. “I feel like Kayce should go to Dutton Ranch,” he said in the interview. “That feels like something that I would lose my shit over as a fan. That would be pretty cool. I just don’t know, in the world of what Marshals is, if Beth coming in would fit into that quite as well.”
Either way, we’re just thrilled to know a continuation of the most popular series on TV is on its way. Now, if we could only get a proper premiere date to mark on our calendars.
