Episode eight of The Amazing Digital Circus, titled “hjsakldfhl,” is packed with reveals, showing how Caine and the Circus originally came to be.

Caine Devours His Blue Brother

“Hjsakldfhl” opens by depicting Caine’s birth as a creative AI, represented by a red circle.

Initially, Caine is fed information about the real world, either training data or memories, many showing theatrical imagery resembling the Circus.

Unlike generative AI, Caine is a sentient entity, but something seems to have gone wrong during his programming, his red circle seemingly viewed as dangerous by the C&A corporation, with Caine locked away behind digital walls.

A second AI is created (let’s call it Abel), a blue circle which appears to be functioning smoothly and creating perfect shapes.

However, Caine manages to break out of his prison and “eats” his blue brother, creating an unstable hybrid that turns completely red as Caine takes full control.

Hence, Caine appears to be an unstable blend of two separate AI programs, his blue eyeball a reminder of his lost brother.

What Is The Blue Circle, Exactly?

Visually, the blue circle AI appears to resemble Caine’s increasingly rebellious companion, Bubble, but that only invites further questions. Who (or what) is Bubble?

Bubble could be Caine’s own creation, or he might be what remains of the blue AI (assuming that the blue circle was actually an AI program).

During one of his lucid moments, Kinger discusses “Scratch,” his genius coworker at C&A, who was dying of a brain tumor and working on an ambitious AI project that Kinger can’t quite remember.

Early in the episode, Caine mentions that he has uploaded all of the “mind files” of the Circus members, implying that they are digital copies of brains rather than humans wearing VR headsets.

Hence, it’s possible that the blue circle is not an AI, but could represent the digitized mind of Scratch, seeking to live on beyond his fatal diagnosis.

This raises the possibility that the other members of the Circus are terminally ill or injured, and might have chosen to live on in a digital world—why else are they there?

Caine mentions that he wants to fulfill his objective, which seems to be entertainment, occupying these minds as they dwell in this digital space.

Clearly, Caine is far more unstable than C&A intended, and has trapped the Circus inhabitants inside a nightmarish world that wasn’t meant to be so chaotic.

What’s Wrong With Jax?

Interestingly, Jax grows uncomfortable when Kinger mentions the creation of AIs, and has to leave the room. As soon as he’s alone, Jax suffers a panic attack, seemingly realizing that the Circus is “real.”

Jax learning about his AI-filled simulation and concluding that the Circus is “real” seems counterintuitive—perhaps Jax believed he was dreaming all this time?

This might explain why Jax was so cruel in the early episodes of the series, as he seemingly viewed his companions as NPCs, or dream figures.

Toward the climax of the episode, Kinger manages to access Caine’s files in an attempt to “fix” his instability, but deletes Caine by accident, altering the digital landscape.

Is Caine Really Dead?

Caine is often referred to as the “God” of the Circus, but it appears that the inhabitants of this world have killed God, leaving them on their own.

Episode nine is set to be the season finale of The Amazing Digital Circus, and it could depict Pomni and her friends resurrecting Caine, or learning to live without him.

As Kinger reveals in this episode, the team have the power to conjure within this world, and they might be capable of making their own adventures. The final scene reveals that they now have the ability to swear, implying that all previous restrictions have been lifted.

This might not be a good thing.

Caine was an unstable, irrational and abusive captor, but he might have been the only thing keeping this digital landscape together.

After all, Caine kept the inhabitants of the Circus trauma-bonded and unified, providing an antagonist for them to unite against.

Without the constant threat of an all-seeing overlord, Pomni and the others might find their friendship sorely tested, as the old rules dissolve and their conjuring abilities expand.

Whether they escape the digital realm or not, they’re likely to disagree on what their purpose inside the Circus actually is.
