Everyone loves animated movies!
The idea that animation is just for kids is thankfully behind us, and more and more audiences around the globe are fully embracing it. Of course, that includes LGBTQ+ fans. While there aren’t a ton of animated movies with queer characters and storylines, the list of animated movies starring queer actors is filled with classics.
Most of these movies feature LGBTQ+ actors voicing main characters, including title characters, heroes, Disney Princesses, and love interests. Some others feature queer actors in smaller, but still memorable, roles.

‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen II’
Tony winner Jonathan Groff (Merrily We Roll Along) stars as the handsome ice harvester Kristoff, who later becomes Anna’s love interest, in these uber-popular Disney films.

‘Mulan’
Jurassic Park franchise star BD Wong provides the speaking voice of the hunky love interest Captain Li Shang in this classic 1998 Disney musical.

‘Wish’
Out Oscar winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) voices the main character, Asha, in this film. Asha is a teenager who wishes on a magic star and must save her kingdom. Out What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén also plays Gabo, a friend of Asha’s.

‘Raya and the Last Dragon’
Kelly Marie Tran (The Wedding Banquet) plays warrior princess Raya in this 2021 Disney film. While starring in the project, Tran said she supported fans who interpreted the character as gay.
“I’m obsessed with Namaari [the other female lead in the film] and I’m obsessed with Gemma Chan, so I’m really excited you brought this up,” Tran told Vanity Fair about a queer reading of the character. “I think if you’re a person watching this movie and you see representation in a way that feels really real and authentic to you, then it is real and authentic. I think it might get me in trouble for saying that, but whatever.”
Tran came out as queer later in 2024 and was named to the 2025 Out100. Trans actor and comedian Patti Harrison also voices a character named Chieftess of Tail.

‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘Finding Dory’
Ellen DeGeneres stars as the forgetful fish Dory in Pixar’s Finding Nemo, and returned for a sequel focusing on her character.

‘Nimona’
Out actress Chloë Grace Moretz voices the titular shapeshifter in this queer fantasy movie, and out actor Eugene Lee Yang voices the heroic and gay knight Goldenloin. Indya Moore, RuPaul, and Julio Torres also voice characters.

‘Zootopia 2’
The queer hosts of the popular podcast Handsome, Mae Martin, Fortune Feimster, and Tig Notaro, will voice a trio of characters in the upcoming animated sequel, Zootopia 2.
Feimster plays a beaver, while Martin and Notaro play a gerbil and a bear who are cellmates in prison.

‘Inside Out 2’
Out The Bear and Bottoms star Ayo Edebiri joined this Pixar sequel as the voice of one of Riley’s new inner emotions, Envy.
Unfortunately, some former Pixar employees said that after the movie Lightyear featured a same-sex kiss, they got studio notes to make the main character Riley “come across as less gay,” including putting “special care into making the relationship between Riley and Val, a supporting character introduced in Inside Out 2, seem as platonic as possible.”
The film is still an excellent (and timely) tale of inner turmoil. And the dad has been appropriated by gay social media as a veritable sex icon.

‘Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’
In this stop-motion sequel, nonbinary actor Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) voices Molly, the headstrong daughter of main characters Ginger and Rocky.

‘Encanto’
Bisexual Brooklyn 99 star Stephanie Beatriz voiced main character Mirabel Madrigal in this 2021 musical. She was joined by fellow out actresses Jessica Darrow as her sister, Luisa, and Diane Guerrero as their sister, Isabela.

Queer actor Auliʻi Cravlho provides both the singing and speaking voices for Disney Princess Moana in both these movies.

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’
What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillén joins the Shrek universe in this sequel, also starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Florence Pugh, John Mulaney, and Wagner Moura. Guillén voices Perrito, a friendly Chihuahua who wants to become a therapy dog.

‘Batman: Mask of the Phantasm’
Iconic Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy came out as gay shortly before his passing. He voiced Batman for over three decades in shows like Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League. He also voiced the superhero and his secret identity, Bruce Wayne, in several animated Batman movies, including Mask of the Phantasm, Return of the Joker, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, and Batman: The Killing Joke.
