As radio listeners have long known, music can help better their mood. But there is plenty of science behind the connection between music and mental health. New York-based DJ and licensed therapist Julie Slavin — known to fans as DJ Hesta Prynn — will explore that connection in a new podcast.
Taught to mix vinyl by Questlove, Slavin has performed alongside Amy Schumer and Deepak Chopra and is a regular guest expert on celebrity.land. She is the creator of Music Connection Therapy, a method that turns the songs you love into tools for emotional growth. Now on the podcast “DJ Hesta Prynn’s Music is Therapy,” she will give podcast listeners the unique opportunity to use music as a cheat code to change how they think, feel, and embrace life.
“Research shows it takes 400 repetitions of a new thought or behavior to form a new neural pathway — anyone who’s ever tried to make a significant change in their life knows how hard that is,” says Slavin. “However, studies also show that when pairing play with a new thought or behavior, the number of required repetitions drops significantly. For adults, play is music and movement.”
Over the course of the 52 episodes, Slavin will speak with leading voices in entertainment, music and wellness, and pair each episode with a bespoke playlist that will help listeners “rewire their brains” to improve their lives. Guests will include her mentor Questlove, as well as Devi Brown, and Dan Savage, among others. In the series, Slavin will also talk with wellness experts across her personal “12 Areas of Life” — her personal wellness framework — to give the audience actionable takeaways. Listeners will learn to set the intention — new job, new relationship, whatever the goal is — use the wisdom from the experts, and pair it with a song to hardwire it into their brain.
The series kicks off with January’s theme: money. After a solo debut episode introducing her approach and the story of how Jay-Z changed her net worth, listeners can expect expert insights from financial leaders Jean Chatzky, Kate Northrup, and New York Times journalist David Gelles about money identity and the songs that are wired for financial success.
“DJ Hesta Prynn’s Music is Therapy” is a joint production of iHeartPodcasts and the New York podcast studio Audiation. New episodes will be available weekly on Fridays. “I’m excited to launch this show in partnership with iHeartPodcasts and look forward to leveraging their massive scale and reach to improve the lives of music lovers everywhere,” Slavin says.
