Body language expert Darren Stanton has said that President Donald Trump’s interaction with King Charles III during their meeting in the UK was marked by mutual respect rather than a display of power.
Speaking to Daily Express US, Stanton explained that while Trump’s use of both hands during the greeting might suggest control in some cases.
“Trump’s hand on Charles’s arm. Now, sometimes that kind of double-handed gesture can be used as a power move, a way of signalling dominance,” Stanton said.
“But here, that’s not what’s going on. The handshake itself is equal, the grip looks balanced, and there are no other accompanying power signals.”
“In this context, it reads much more as a gesture of warmth. It is a sign of rapport and friendliness, rather than control.”
“In terms of Charles’ comfort level, he looks at ease. There’s no pulling back, no tightening of the lips or shoulders, and his eye contact is steady,” Stanton said.
“If he were uncomfortable, we’d expect to see him lean away or disengage, but instead he’s fully engaged in the moment, which suggests he’s comfortable with the interaction.”
Melania Trump’s posture during the exchange also reinforced a sense of composure and balance.
Stanton noted her ability to remain present without drawing unnecessary attention.
“Melania’s body language is quite telling,” he said.
“She holds herself with poise, calm and composed, not fading into the background but also not seeking the spotlight. Her posture suggests she’s comfortable in her role here, present, supportive, and content to let the focus rest on the handshake.”
He also highlighted the trio’s physical arrangement during the moment as an important detail.
“One other thing that’s worth pointing out is the symmetry of the grouping. The three of them form a balanced unit, what we’d call a triad, which signals inclusion,” Stanton said.
“Even though Melania isn’t directly part of the handshake, her positioning makes it clear she’s part of the interaction. That kind of alignment adds to the overall impression of authenticity.”
