The Doo Wop Project came to the Woodlands Auditorium and blew the roof off the building with its Doo-Wop-ified versions of anything but golden oldie standards.
Charl Brown, Dwayne Cooper, Michael Fasano, Russell Fischer, and Dominic Nolfi combined to present a program of past favorites and threw in some current hits to wow the crowd. Impeccable vocals, tight harmonies, and entertaining choreography opened the show, but it was the stage presence and rapport with the audience that sealed the deal.
Impressive describes the musicians who shone throughout the night. No keyboard on this stage; the Baldwin grand piano was front and center. There was a female bassist and a great saxophone player; add in the drummer and lead guitarist as additional assets.
Favorites such as “So in Love,” “Walk like a Man,” “Sherry,” and “Blue Moon” were well received. New numbers, including Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” “My Girl,” Smokey Robinson’s “Shop Around,” and even a Taylor Swift song, were standouts.
The Hot Springs Village Concerts Association held a special prize drawing on both Thursday and Friday evenings, offering a $50 gift certificate to The Balboa Club. Gloria Hefner won on Thursday night, and a press deadline is delaying the announcement of Friday’s winner.
The VCA chose well when they opted to sponsor “Echoes of the Street” by the Doo Wop Project. One of the best entertainment opportunities in recent years.
