Key Points
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt tell EW the former wrestler pitched himself for a role in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
“He tried,” Blunt confirms in an exclusive interview with EW.
Johnson noted light character details for the role he wanted to play in the sequel.
Like Anne Hathaway‘s Andy Sachs sold her soul the day she put on that first pair of Jimmy Choos, Dwayne Johnson nearly traded his wrestling tights for the Chanel boots (or something like them) when he attempted to pitch himself to friend Emily Blunt for a role in the upcoming Devil Wears Prada 2.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast (below), the longtime friends and Smashing Machine and Jungle Cruise costars reveal that Johnson desperately wanted to join the highly anticipated (and highly secretive) production, which reunites OG Devil Wears Prada stars Hathaway, Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and Meryl Streep for a continuation of the plot set forth in the 2006 blockbuster dramedy.
“I pitched myself. I told her when she was shooting,” Johnson tells EW, with Blunt confirming that “he tried” to land a small role in the production, directed by original helmer David Frankel and written by the Oscar-nominated first film’s returning screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna.

Dwayne Johnson in ‘The Smashing Machine’
Johnson says that the character would’ve been “just someone who knew fashion, who was cool” and who “would come in” to all the stylish fun.
Blunt jokingly adds that the character would’ve also been someone “who’s great at walking in heels, as you are,” to which Johnson quips, “size 15 heels!”
“You should see him in a pair of heels. Hot,” Blunt replies as the pair chuckled at the thought.
When Awardist podcast host Gerrad Hall presses for more details on Blunt’s character, also named Emily, who, in the first film, served as an assistant to Streep’s ruthless Runway fashion magazine editor, Blunt refuses to spill much on the project.
“See, you’re trying to get me to talk about the movie and I can’t tell you anything,” Blunt responds, later adding only that she “was thrilled” upon reading the script.
In response to a question about Emily’s career status in the film, Blunt again stresses, “I can’t tell you” and that “I will literally be killed.”
Still, she did reflect on the hordes of fans who swarmed the film’s New York City set over the summer.
“Emily would send me these videos, she was kind of in her car, waiting to step out on set in New York City out in the streets, she was like, ‘Look at this!'” Johnson remembers. “It was wild. Like, pop star level sighting.”
Speaking of pop stars, EW did previously learn that Grammy-winning superstar Lady Gaga landed a small part in the film — which Blunt jokingly calls “actually the role Dwayne was going for.”
In addition to being the first outlet to confirm in 2024 that all OG stars were in talks to return for the Devil Wears Prada 2, EW additionally exclusively revealed that 2006 star Adrian Grenier would not reprise the role of Andy’s love interest, Nate, in the sequel.

Plot details for the second film are still under wraps, though the first teaser trailer promised the return of Andy (Hathaway) to the Runway offices, where she joined Miranda Priestly (Streep) in an elevator, years after the former left her job as an assistant to the fashion icon.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in theaters May 1. Listen to Blunt and Johnson discuss the film in the Awardist podcast episode above.
