On Instagram, Dwayne Johnson revealed a small but touching tribute for the late Robin Williams while on the set of the Jumanji franchise’s final film. While riding to the first day of filming, the iconic actor noted how nice it was to film a movie in Los Angeles and quickly brought attention to his interesting necklace. The braided rope necklace is adorned with one of the dice from the original Jumanji film starring the late Robin Williams. This was made in an effort to honor the franchise’s beginnings, along with the incredible actor who started it all.
“This is the dice from the original Jumanji with Robin Williams, as a show of respect and a way of honoring Robin and this entire franchise he started as we film our very last Jumanji, the big finale,” Johnson wrote on Instagram.
The newer trilogy of Jumanji films is actually considered a soft-reboot, rather than an all-out remake. The events from Robin Williams’ film are somewhat referenced throughout the first two films, but will likely have more of an impact on the third. ‘The Rock’ called the necklace an Easter Egg, but it could indicate that Robin Williams’ original film will have a much larger role to play in the final film of the trilogy. It is very likely that this will be the ending to the film franchise in its entirety, unless it is revived again decades from now.
Despite the somewhat illicit reputation that is held by reboot films, the Jumanji continuation films have been incredibly popular. They have spot-on humor and are easily one of the best reboots to exist in the medium. The first two films honor and continue the franchise without degrading the previous content whatsoever. In fact, they are so separate that they could easily be considered completely different worlds if there weren’t subtle jabs, references, and continued continuity sprinkled throughout the films.
The choice to honor the late-Robin Williams is an incredibly touching decision for the character who arguably picks up the proverbial Jumanji torch in these films. Since his unfortunate passing, the actor has continued to have a large impact on the film world as a whole. Johnson’s decision to wear the dice from the original movie not only calls back to the beginning of the franchise, but shows that the series has far from forgotten its entertaining roots.
In the end, Dwayne Johnson’s small easter egg as Dr. Bravestone is an incredible way to continue hype for the new film ahead of its release. Interestingly enough, since Johnson admitted he was heading to the first day of filming, it appears that promotional material began releasing before filming even commenced. Either the showrunners have a lot of faith in this film, or they want to make sure that all eyes are on it before it hits theaters in December of next year.
