After a period of uncertainty, word has come down from heaven (okay, Deadline, but that’s where I wanna go when I die!) that Alien: Earth is coming back for Season 2. It seemed touch-and-go for a bit, which had many fans in a state of distress, especially considering the exciting cliffhanger ending of the show’s debut season.
The news of Alien: Earth’s renewal comes alongside news of series creator Noah Hawley renewing his own development deal with FX and Disney. I don’t know how these behind-the-scenes negotiations work out, but I can’t imagine Alien: Earth without Hawley’s involvement, so I bet the show’s future was a valuable tool when it came to negotiating Hawley’s continued association with FX.
Hawley has a storied history with the network, having turned Fargo from a 1990s Coen Brothers movie into an unlikely and successful TV franchise. He also turned Legion from a second-tier (okay, maybe third tier) X-Men character into the main hero of a surreal and psychedelic TV series. Basically, he’s one of FX’s most valuable hitmakers, and Disney would be smart to pay him a big pile of money to stick around and continue making TV shows for them.
I really liked Alien: Earth. It felt like a great start to a new Alien story, and I was really nervous that we would only get the tip of the iceberg when it came to exploring the story (insert ‘just the tip’ joke here). As much as I like the show, it’s clear that it’s just the beginning of what Hawley has in store for his corner of the Alien universe. Plus, if I don’t get to see Samuel Blenkin’s Boy Kavalier die a horrifically graphic death within my lifetime, I’m never going to forgive the powers-that-be at FX.
