PHILADELPHIA — Shortstop Edmundo Sosa was pulled for pinch hitter Weston Wilson in the seventh inning of an eventual 8-2 Phillies win over the Kansas City Royals.
Sosa left the game as a precaution with right groin tightness, per manager Rob Thomson postgame.
Sosa is day-to-day.
“I just saw him favor it a little bit while he was on defense,” Thomson said. If Sosa cannot play on Saturday, Bryson Stott could start at shortstop. Wilson and Donovan Walton are also options up the middle. Stott, who homered in the bottom of the seventh, moved from second base to shortstop after Sosa’s departure from the game.
Sosa’s early exit comes just days after the Phillies placed both Alec Bohm and Trea Turner on the 10-day injured list. Bohm could be back after the 10 days are up. Turner is expected to return before the postseason begins.
Sosa was hobbled for most of the game, but it became evident that the Phillies infielder was dealing with an issue in his lower half when he couldn’t reach a ball up the middle off the bat of Kyle Isbel in the seventh inning. Sosa’s last injured list stint came in September 2024. He spent 10 days on the IL with back spasms.
The 29-year-old is in the middle of another productive season at the plate for the Phillies as the club’s main utility man. Sosa is batting .270 with a .725 OPS.
