MEYERSDALE — The 125th Somerset County Fair kicked off with a bang as plenty of activities, shows and entertainment that filled the stands during the week.
“The number of people in the stands is really up each night, higher than they were in previous years,” said fair board president Dave Berkey Aug. 20. He said Tuesday night’s “fireworks display went really well and we may bring the fireworks back next year.”
Market animal shows are one of the highlights of each day’s events. Winning titles this year are:

The Dairy Show open champion was Allen Lehman with his Holstein. Makala Rider’s Jersey won the Junior Champion title.
Rain over the weekend made the track in front of the grandstand muddy, and the annual Farmers’ and Merchants’ Parade was moved to the Midway. Berkey said he was extremely disappointed that a last-minute increase in insurance rates for the Sand Drag Car Racing event caused the board to cancel it.
But it didn’t deter the enthusiasm for the fair, he said.
“It’s been a great year,” Berkey said.
The fair concludes on Aug. 23 with the Appalachian Outlaws Pulling Series Championship Series in front of the grandstand.
