Disney movie ‘Camp Rock 3’ is officially confirmed to be in the works as of Sep. 26,  joining the massively successful ‘Camp Rock’ franchise. The film adds to the rather hefty list of rebooted films Disney has greenlit in recent years, reinforcing the trend of film powerhouses, such as Disney, capitalizing upon their most successful nostalgic works.

A possible explanation to this surge in rebooted and sequel films could be related to past box office successes and failures that Disney has had in recent years. There is no denying the fact that the movie industry has changed since the pandemic, as well as the increased use of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. Due to these factors, companies like Disney may be aiming to ‘play it safe’ to ensure they do well in box office sales.

Amirreza Fazli, Professor of Marketing at Loyola says, “From a business perspective, nostalgia is a shortcut to attention. In a world where hundreds of new shows and films launch every month, a familiar title instantly cuts through the noise.”

This hasn’t always been the case though. There have been many reboots that have suffered from large box office losses. Forbes journalist Caroline Reid documented that ‘The Little Mermaid’ (2023), for example, “lost an estimated $4.9 million at the box office.”

That being said, even if a film performs poorly at the box office, there is still tons of potential for profit, especially for films produced by Disney. Fazli says that for companies like Disney, box office performances are not the end-all be-all when it comes to deeming a film successful or not.

“Each title fuels theme-park experiences, merchandise, streaming subscriptions, and cross-promotions with other Disney brands. The payoff extends far beyond box-office revenue,” Fazli said.

On social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X, there has been a lot of discourse regarding rebooted films and sequels recently. Projects like ‘Lilo And Stitch’ (2025) and ‘The Little Mermaid’ (2023) were faced with a lot of backlash upon their releases. Despite this online backlash, some of these rebooted movies have still done well in the box office. ‘Lilo And Stitch’ (2025) for example, hit $1 billion at the global box office and was the first Motion Picture Association title of 2025 to do so, becoming a huge accomplishment for Disney.

“A well-crafted film and strong word-of-mouth often outlast initial negativity, especially when the product ultimately delivers on quality,” Fazli said.

Films that rely heavily, or even entirely, on nostalgia may very well resonate with target audiences enough for the film to make a large profit. In film, nostalgia acts as a way to emotionally comfort the film’s target audience in a way that motivates them enough to buy a ticket and sit down to watch that film.

“After seeing ‘Freakier Friday’ in theaters, I became very reminiscent of my childhood years at home because ‘Freaky Friday’ was one of my most-watched movies when I was kid. It reminded me a lot of that time and brought me back to it in a way,” said Keegan Murray ‘28.
