Soap opera royalty joined the hallowed halls of General Hospital, and now Daytime Emmy winner Erika Slezak has opened up about the experience of joining the legacy program and her reaction to the storyline she was asked to portray.
In a new video posted on the official General Hospital YouTube channel, Slezak reflected on her experience filming the long-running ABC soap opera.
The video opens up with the award-winning actress sharing, “It is such fun to be here with a lot of the actors that I had worked with before, and actors that I had never worked with before, like Jane Elliot, who is just the queen.”
She continued praising her co-stars, adding, “She’s just fantastic, and we’ve had a lot of scenes together, which is lovely. The first day I thought, okay, I know so-and-so, but everybody became my friend like right away.”
The actress said the cast and crew have made her feel welcome from the beginning. “Everybody has been lovely, and working with these actors has been an absolute joy.”
That isn’t to say that joining the cast of General Hospital has been an easy experience for her. Slezak last appeared in daytime television in 2013, when One Life to Live last aired on Hulu. Since then, the pace of daytime has only accelerated, as the actress shared, “The schedule is so different from what I’m used to. You jump back and forth and back and forth. From one script to 12 scripts later, and it’s something you just have to get used to. I’m still kind of going, ‘Uh, what day is it?”
Slezak shared she was worried when she initially spoke with Executive Producer Frank Valentini about joining the show. She did not want to replace Leslie Charleson (Monica Quartermaine), but her fears were quickly relieved. “When Frank asked me to come here, I said, ‘I’m not going to replace Leslie.’ He said, ‘No, no, no.’ And that’s nice because it’s wrapping up Monica’s story. I think she would be pleased with it. I hope she would be.”
General Hospital continues weekdays on ABC and weeknights on Hulu.
