The Estudiantina of Melbourne celebrated the launch of their new album Ta Nisia on Sunday, bringing together members of Melbourne’s Greek community and lovers of traditional music for an evening dedicated to the sounds and stories of the Greek islands.

The event marked an important milestone for the ensemble and for Melbourne’s vibrant Greek musical scene, with the launch featuring a live performance of selections from the new album before an enthusiastic and engaged audience.

Drawing inspiration from the rich musical traditions of the Aegean islands, Ta Nisia showcases distinctive regional melodies, rhythms and lyrical themes that reflect island life, celebration and longing.

Throughout the evening, the ensemble performed with the warmth and musicianship that has become synonymous with their work. Traditional instruments including the violin, santouri, oud and guitar created the layered sound world associated with the historic estudiantina orchestras of Smyrna and Constantinople, transporting listeners across the musical landscapes of the Aegean.

Audience members responded with enthusiasm, praising the group’s dedication to preserving and sharing Hellenic musical heritage in Australia.

Beyond celebrating the release of the album, the launch also highlighted the role of traditional music in strengthening cultural identity and connecting communities across generations.

Ta Nisia reflects the ensemble’s continued commitment to researching, arranging and performing traditional repertoire with authenticity and care. The album captures the spirit of island music while expressing the distinctive musical voice the Estudiantina of Melbourne has developed through years of collaboration and performance.

Sunday’s launch was both a celebration and a significant moment for the group, reinforcing their growing contribution to Melbourne’s cultural landscape and ensuring that the timeless music of the Greek islands continues to resonate with audiences locally and beyond.

The album Ta Nisia is now available through the ensemble’s official website.
