IT’S BEEN A long, long, loooooong wait, but those who’ve practiced patience are about to be rewarded, because Euphoria is back for its third season. In the four years since HBO’s chaotic teen drama has been off the air, three of its major stars—Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney—have become among the biggest movie stars on the planet. In the time off-screen, then, so too have their characters. When we pick up with Euphoria’s third season, it’s no longer a teen drama, but rather, well, sort of a little bit of everything drama.
Rue (Zendaya) is now a drug mule, regularly crossing the border in order to pay off debts. Nate (Elordi) and Cassie (Sweeney) are now living an idyllic suburban life… one that neither seems particularly happy in (We’re already sensing shades of Blue Velvet or, funny enough, HBO’s recent suburban malaise drama DTF St. Louis). And the story only promises to get more and more chaotic from there.
While not the entire cast is returning—fellow ascending stars Barbie Ferreira and Austin Abrams have moved on, while Angus Cloud unfortunately passed away back in 2023—plenty others still are. Colman Domingo, who plays Rue’s sponsor Ali and has himself become an Oscar nominee, is back. So is Alexa Demie, who plays Maddy, Hunter Schafer, who plays Jules, and Maude Apatow, who plays Lexie. Eric Dane, who died due to complications of ALS earlier this year, also returns, having filmed scenes prior to his passing.
New characters enter the mix as well. Lexie has a job working with a TV show run by a new character played by Sharon Stone. Lost alum Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays a dangerous operator of strip clubs whom Rue gets involved with (and Barry star Darrell Britt-Gibson and NFL legend Marshawn Lynch plays his hired muscle). Even newcomer Homer Gere (son of Richard) has a role here intertwining with both Lexi and Maddy as a TV star.
Which is all to say… there’s a lot going on. It’s hard to say what particular direction Euphoria is going to go in its wild third season. But we can be sure that with these actors on board, and a chaotic enough story, it’s probably going to be a pretty fun time. And as the case with many HBO shows of this magnitude, you’re not going to want to be left out when it comes up as a topic in the break room at work.
