Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee tucked callbacks to the band’s first two records into a track on their latest album, Sanctuary. “Forever Without You” starts with the lines, “This is the last tear fallen/ this is the last open door.” Those words point back to 2003’s Fallen and 2006’s The Open Door.
“I’m making a reference to the early days, I guess, to kind of explain to anybody listening that I’m talking about the past,” Lee told ABC Audio.
The words “open door” appeared in the group’s catalog before. Lee begins “Bring Me to Life” with “How can you see into my eyes/ Like open doors?”
“I think dropping those in ‘Forever Without You’ is sort of the entrance to the song where I’m saying, ‘Hey, we’re about to, we’re about to talk about that time,'” she told ABC Audio.
The RIAA gave “Bring Me to Life” Diamond status in June. That 2003 single became the band’s breakout hit and launched them into mainstream success.
Lee said an open door represents movement. Progress. “Generally, an open door to me means a way forward,” she said. “That we’re not trapped, and we’re not stuck in the past or stuck in one place, that we’re free.”
The singer explained that freedom has driven her songwriting since the start. “I think the quest for freedom, freedom in your heart, is a big theme that has been with me from the beginning,” she said in the interview.
