Prince Harry has been open about his dreams of reuniting with the royal family – and what better time to do so than at Christmas?
The Duke of Sussex hasn’t spent Christmas with his family since 2018 and instead has been celebrating the holiday with his wife Meghan Markle and their two children in Montecito, California.
With Harry’s relationship with his father King Charles taking a promising turn for the better, however, fans are hopeful Meghan and Harry could spend Christmas in the U.K. with the royal family. But former royal butler Grant Harrold believes there’s one thing that would need to happen for the reunion to take place – Harry issuing an apology to Queen Camilla.
Speaking to The Express US on behalf of OLBG, Harrold said, “The main obstacle has always been what Harry said about Camilla.”
Harry criticized his step-mom in his explosive debut memoir, Spare. In the book, Harry branded Camilla “dangerous” and said she was a “villain” for allegedly leaking stories to the press.
Harry also claimed he and his brother, Prince William, begged their father not to marry Camilla, as he described her as his “wicked stepmother.”
Harrold continued, “If she has chosen to forgive and move on, then I can absolutely see the King extending an invitation to Harry and Meghan for Christmas. Charles doesn’t like holding grudges; he prefers peace, and he has offered olive branches before.”
The royal expert also said extending a Christmas invitation to Meghan and Harry would “signal unity – even if they aren’t suddenly best friends.”
He added, “And the fact that there have been meetings, discussions, and very little briefing afterwards suggests things may indeed be improving behind the scenes.”
However, it’s not just Camilla who Harrold thinks could put a stop to Harry spending Christmas with the royal family. He believes Prince William will also be reluctant.
“William is the bigger unknown,” Harrold told us, before adding, “But I’m sure he, the King, and Queen Camilla will have discussed the possibility, because that’s what families do.”
Commenting on Harry and Meghan’s possible response to a Christmas invite, Harrold said, “They may choose to stay in California, especially with Meghan’s mother there and the likelihood that the invitation would be for the couple rather than the whole extended family.
“They might instead plan to see the King in the New Year – which ties into the upcoming state visit.”
If Harry and Meghan don’t reunite with the royal family in person over Christmas, Harrold believes they could still reach out with a video call.
“I think that is almost certain,” he told us. “Not necessarily because of Harry and Meghan, but because Harry will want his children to have some kind of relationship with their grandfather.
“A cheerful video call with the kids would be an easy, positive gesture, and I can imagine Camilla being present for it as well.”
