NEED TO KNOW

  • Alex Jenkinson was charged with harassing Prince Andrew near his Sandringham home and faces multiple legal restrictions

  • Jenkinson must stay 500 meters away from royal properties and pleaded guilty to failing to provide a blood specimen

  • Ex-Prince Andrew, reportedly shaken by the incident, is expected to provide evidence for the ongoing case

The masked man who allegedly harassed the former Prince Andrew near his new home in Sandringham has been banned from going near royal properties in the wake of the incident.

On May 8, Norfolk Police announced the news in a statement seen by PEOPLE after the alleged harasser, Alex Jenkinson, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court today via live link following the ordeal earlier this week near Andrew’s new home, Marsh Farm.

Jenkinson, 39, was charged with two counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behavior to harass, cause alarm or distress and failing to provide a blood specimen in custody.

The man from Stowmarket, Suffolk, pleaded not guilty to the counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behavior to harass, cause alarm or distress and was released on conditional bail, with those conditions stipulating that he must stay away from royal residences.

Jenkinson is now not allowed to enter Norfolk, be in the vicinity of royally-owned premises in the U.K. or contact the victim. He pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen and has also been hit with an interim disqualification from driving.

The man is now due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on July 29, and the BBC reported that Andrew, 66, is expected to give evidence. The prosecution asked for Andrew to provide evidence via remote link from King’s Lynn Magistrates’ court, which the chief magistrate granted, but suggested it may be better for him to do so from a location that was not a court.

According to the outlet, Jenkinson must stay 500m away from the royal residences of the Sandringham Estate, Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, King Charles‘ Highgrove and Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The BBC said that Jenkinson’s charges stem from accusations of threatening a man named Stephen Terry on May 5 and the former Duke of York on May 6. Jenkinson appeared in court on Friday via video link from King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre in Norfolk and wore a sling on his right arm, the outlet said.

On May 7, Norfolk Police confirmed to PEOPLE that a man was arrested in the village of Wolferton after “behaving in an intimidating manner.” The village is where Andrew’s new home, Marsh Farm, is located, within the Sandringham Estate.

“Officers were called to Wolferton shortly after 7.30 p.m yesterday (Wednesday 6 May 2026) following a report a man was behaving in an intimidating manner in the village. Officers attended, and the man was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and possession of an offensive weapon,” the statement said. “He was taken to King’s Lynn Police Investigation Centre for questioning and remains in custody.”

The Sun reported that Andrew was out walking dogs believed to be the late Queen Elizabeth‘s corgis when the incident occurred on Wednesday night near the Sandringham Estate.

The news broke when The Telegraph reported that a man wearing a balaclava, or ski mask, was arrested after allegedly threatening Andrew. According to the outlet, the masked man had been sitting in his car and exited the vehicle when the former Duke of York was about 50 yards away, shouting at him as he approached.

King Charles‘ brother was with a member of his private security team and “rushed towards his own car, parked nearby, and drove away at speed as the suspect allegedly tried to sprint after him,” The Telegraph said.

Buckingham Palace declined to comment when reached by PEOPLE.

The Telegraph reported that Andrew was shaken by the incident and was asked to provide a statement to authorities, as was his protection officer.

“This shows why Andrew’s security provisions need to be proportionate and properly balanced for an individual with a very high profile. Surely this demonstrates why his security should be reviewed,” a source told the outlet.

The former Prince Andrew’s official security is said to have been stripped in 2022, the same year that the late Queen stripped her second son of his military titles and patronages after a judge rejected his attempt to have Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre’s sexual assault lawsuit against him dismissed.

Andrew’s royal role had already been reduced after he stepped back from his public royal role in November 2019, following a bombshell BBC interview in which he discussed his ties to Epstein. King Charles, 77, stripped Andrew of his royal titles in October 2025 amid renewed scrutiny of his relationship with Epstein; Andrew has continuously denied any wrongdoing regarding their association.

After Andrew was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office as authorities investigate a claim he shared confidential information with Epstein in his former royal role as a U.K. trade envoy, the King pledged his “full and wholehearted support and co-operation” with authorities.

King Charles reportedly cut Andrew’s $1.3 million allowance and stopped paying for his personal security in 2024, drawing a firmer line about two years after his accession to the throne.
