The Furman Department of Music will present a recital featuring Tyler Goodwin-Souffront, horn, Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Daniel Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Goodwin-Souffront ’15 is the adjunct instructor of horn at Furman University, Converse University, and Lenoir-Rhyne University (in addition to Head of the Music Theory Department). He has previously held positions at Limestone University, the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, and more.

In addition, Goodwin-Souffront has held teaching positions at the Clover School District, Spartanburg School District 5, Fort Mill School District, Greenville County School District, York School District in addition to numerous guest appearances in masterclasses across at the Southeast and Mid-West Regions of the United States. Many of his students have successfully placed in Region and All-State Bands in North and South Carolina, Indiana, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia as well as other invitational clinics throughout the United States and Europe such as the Honor Band and Orchestra of America, NYO and NYO2, the Aspen Music Festival, Suwannee Music Festival, the Brevard Summer Music Center and more.

Other students have won professional positions with The Orchestra Now, The Orchestra Next, the Lonestar Winds, the Salisbury Symphony, Foothills Philharmonic Orchestra, and more. Goodwin-Souffront has made guest appearances as a Contributing Artist as a presenter, performer, and adjudicator at the Southeast Horn Workshop (2020, 2022-2024), the Mid-South Horn Workshop (2024), and the International Horn Symposium (2023-2024).

Goodwin-Souffront is an active performer and is the Fourth Hornist of Symphony of the Mountains (Kingsport, TN) and Brevard Philharmonic (Brevard, NC as well as being the Personnel Manager), the Third Hornist of the GAMAC Chamber Orchestra in addition to being the Acting Second Horn of the Salisbury Symphony (Salisbury, NC) and plays as a section horn for the Poinsett Wind Symphony (Greenville, SC).

He has also performed with numerous ensembles across the United States and Europe including the Western Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, Hendersonville Symphony, Bloomington Symphony, Fountain Inn Symphony Orchestra, Foothills Philharmonic and more. Additionally, Goodwin-Souffront has commissioned and premiered numerous pieces throughout his career for solo horn, horn and chamber ensemble, horn concerti and more by composers such as Catherine Likhuta, Shanyse Strickland, Mica Redden, Jacob White, Isaac Smith and more.

Goodwin-Souffront has received degrees from Furman University (B.M., Music Performance, Music Composition, and Film Studies), the University of North Carolina in Greensboro (M.M., Music Performance), and is currently completing his doctoral studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (D.M., Music Performance and Pedagogy). He has studied with numerous musicians such as Andrew Bain (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Denise Tryon (Philadelphia Orchestra and American Horn Quartet), Dale Clevenger (Chicago Symphony), Jeff Nelsen (Canadian Brass), Tod Bowermaster (St. Louis Symphony Orchestra), Elizabeth Freimuth (Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra), Margaret Tung (Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra), Jeffrey Whaley (Knoxville and Asheville Symphony, Symphony of the Mountains), Gail Williams, Abigail Pack, Lanette Compton, Sean Yancer, Richard Seraphinoff, Rebekah Daley, and more.
