Following the death of legendary actress Catherine O’Hara, remembered for many prominent roles, including as Kevin McCallister’s mother in the blockbuster hit “Home Alone,” grieving fans paid tribute on Friday by stopping at the iconic Winnetka home made famous by the holiday classic.
An icon, legend and beloved television staple, O’Hare entertained audiences for decades with her humor and grace, most recently in the hit TV show “Schitt’s Creek” and “The Studio.”
But first, she entertained the world through her major roles in “Beetlejuice” and Home Alone.”
She recently spoke to NBC News about the impact the acclaimed holiday film has – decades later.
“It was honestly the first movie I ever saw in the theater,” she said.
Fans stopped by the iconic home, which served as the McCallister family’s residence in the movie. With the holiday lights on and snow falling outside, you could almost picture O’Hara there.
“She’s just amazing, and I was like, ‘I can’t believe we’re going to see it on the day that Kevin’s mom died,'” one visitor said.
Others expressed sheer admiration of the beloved actress.
“It’s definitely heartbreaking. We all grew up in the 90s with our beloved ‘Home Alone.’ Both one and two, and even more modernly – ‘Schitt’s Creek,” said fan Jude Howell.
Macaulay Culkin, O’Hara’s on-screen son, was one of the first to make tributes, posting, “Mama, I thought we had time. I wanted more.”
Outside the home on Friday, people took pictures and reminisced on their favorite lines from the movie.
“Keep the change you filthy animal,” one visitor said.
While the house may be quiet inside, O’Hara’s voice, humor and heart will echo through generations – her legacy will live on through holiday magic.
“She’s been an all time cure all for all of us,” a fan stated.
While O’Hara’s cause of death is not known, a representative said she battled a brief illness.
