Key Terms

event cinema

technical

Live or pre-recorded performances and special broadcasts—such as concerts, opera, theater, sports, or cultural events—shown in movie theaters instead of traditional films. Think of a cinema acting like a big, communal TV that screens a one-time event for a paying audience. For investors, event cinema represents an alternative revenue stream and audience-building tool for theater chains and distributors, affecting box office receipts, scheduling, and marketing strategies.

cloud-based platform

technical

A cloud-based platform is a service that delivers software and data storage over the internet, allowing users to access and use applications from any device with an internet connection. It works like a virtual workspace hosted online, eliminating the need for physical servers or software installed on individual computers. For investors, it often indicates a company’s reliance on modern, scalable technology that can reduce costs and improve flexibility.

digital cinema

technical

Digital cinema is the creation, distribution and playback of movies using fully digital files and projectors instead of physical film reels. Like switching from printed photos to digital images, it changes how films are delivered, stored and shown, affecting costs, speed and the kinds of services and equipment companies need; investors track it because those shifts influence revenue models, capital spending and competitive dynamics in media and theater-related businesses.

event cinema production

technical

A production that records a live performance or event—such as a concert, play, sporting match, or lecture—and packages it for cinema or large‑screen release and related distribution channels. Think of it like filming a stage show and turning it into a movie, with on‑site multi‑camera capture, editing, sound mixing, and post‑production aimed at theatrical presentation. Investors care because it creates additional box‑office, licensing and streaming revenue streams and involves distinct production, distribution and rights costs.

Industry Veteran and Theatrical Distribution Innovator to Lead Company Into its Next Chapter of Growth

DENVER–(BUSINESS WIRE)–
Fathom Entertainment, the leading specialty distributor of content to theatrical partners worldwide, announced the appointment of Jason Brenek as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Brenek, a seasoned global entertainment and technology executive with an entrepreneurial background and a career spanning a wide array of leadership roles, including senior positions at The Walt Disney Company, IMAX Corporation, and MetaMedia, will become Fathom’s new CEO following the previously announced retirement of Ray Nutt.

Speaking on behalf of the Fathom Entertainment Board of Directors, comprised of senior executives from Fathom’s founding owners including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, “Jason is the right leader to build on Fathom’s remarkable foundation of success in theatrical distribution and take the company into its next era of growth,” said Adam Rymer, Chief Commercial Officer at Regal Global Entertainment. “Jason’s expertise across theatrical distribution, content and event cinema production and marketing, and technology, combined with a history of working with Fathom and a deep understanding and appreciation of the company, made him the clear choice. We are grateful to Ray Nutt for the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind and thrilled to see what Jason and the incredible team at Fathom will build from here.”

Fathom Entertainment is co-owned by the world’s three largest theatrical operators: AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc., Cinemark Holdings, Inc., and Regal Global Entertainment, which collectively represent more than 19,000 screens across the U.S.

“There are very few companies in this industry that genuinely expand what the moviegoing experience can be. Fathom created the category of “event cinema,” and I have admired what this team has built for well over a decade. Having had the opportunity to work with Fathom at different points in my career, I have seen firsthand the care and creativity this organization brings to content producers, cinema partners, and millions of consumers,” said Brenek. “Under Ray’s leadership, Fathom has grown into something truly special during this period of radical change in the broader business of entertainment – a company with a devoted audience, a distinct identity, and a real and expanding role in the theatrical landscape.”

Brenek continued, “My focus will be on expanding and elevating the content we bring to the big screen, deepening the relationships we have with our exhibitor and content partners, and growing Fathom’s reach and relevance in ways that deliver communal experiences to audiences and grow the broader entertainment ecosystem. I could not be more pleased to lead this company into its next chapter.”

Brenek assumes the top leadership position at Fathom, as the company continues its evolution from Fathom Events into Fathom Entertainment, a full-service specialty theatrical distributor with major motion picture distribution capabilities. The company’s upcoming wide theatrical release of Wildwood, LAIKA’s acclaimed new stop-motion feature film opening in theatres nationwide this October 23, marks a landmark expansion of Fathom’s programming footprint.

Brenek brings more than two decades of senior executive experience across theatrical marketing and distribution, cinema technology, and global content production and releasing strategy. Most recently, he served as Founder and CEO of MetaMedia, the world’s first global cloud-based platform for delivering movies, live events, and premium content to cinemas at scale, including Garth Brooks, Coldplay, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Blake Shelton, live sports from ESPN, NCAA , WWE, UFC, and esports from Activision Blizzard and Epic Games. Under his leadership, MetaMedia pioneered real-time, cloud-based content delivery to more than 600 cinemas across 30 leading chains worldwide before its successful acquisition by Qube Cinema in 2025.

Before founding MetaMedia, Brenek served as Executive Vice President of IMAX Corporation and President of IMAX HOME, leading global product and technology platform launches designed to extend the IMAX experience beyond the cinema. Prior to IMAX, he spent more than a decade in various senior leadership at The Walt Disney Company, including Senior Vice President of Worldwide Digital Cinema and Cinema Programming. Brenek was responsible for setting and executing Disney’s global cinema strategy, overseeing the global transition from analog to digital cinema as Chairman of Digital Cinema Initiatives and by negotiating Digital Cinema financing and deployment deals, and leading Disney’s Digital Cinema Operations team.

While at Disney, Brenek also oversaw the company’s 3D and event cinema production and programming, which included co-producing two Disney feature films and pioneering live ESPN, NBA, and NCAA sporting events for cinemas. In 2025, Brenek was presented with the International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society’s first-ever Founders Award. While serving as Disney’s Senior Vice President of International In-Home, Brenek oversaw a multi-billion-dollar division leading groundbreaking home streaming and television distribution partnerships in more than 70 countries.
