FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) — With temperatures continuing to soar and Fourth of July celebrations approaching, the City of Fayetteville is rolling out extra measures to help keep the community safe during its annual Independence Day festivities.

Hydration stations will be available throughout downtown, offering relief from the heat as thousands are expected to gather for the free celebration.

City officials say the event at Festival Park is designed to bring the community together through live music, patriotic pride and a focus on safety.

Attendees can look forward to performances by the Fayetteville Orchestra and Fayetteville Symphonic Band, which will join service members from the 82nd Airborne Division Band for a special concert.

“God bless everybody who’s here. And here’s to another 250,” said veteran Matthew Kane, reflecting on the unity and spirit of the celebration.

For some, like Pembroke resident and Army employee Toni Burnette, the holiday carries special meaning this year.

“Being an American is amazing. We have the cultures that we do, and all of us can come together,” Burnette said.

She said her family plans to celebrate the Lumbee Tribe before heading to the beach later in the holiday weekend.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and is expected to draw large crowds to downtown Fayetteville.

In response to the extreme heat, the Fayetteville Fire Department has increased staffing for the event, placing six firefighters on duty instead of four.

“We’re excited for the festivities, but we’ve also upped our staffing for the event,” said Stephen Shakeshaft, public information officer for the Fayetteville Fire Department. “Fayetteville firefighters, Cape Fear, Valley EMS, all on site, ready to respond as needed.”

City officials reminded attendees of several event policies:

  • A clear bag policy will be enforced
  • Only service animals are permitted
  • Skateboards, bicycles, personal tents or canopies, and outside food and beverages are not allowed

The concert begins at 7:15 p.m., followed by a fireworks display at 9:15 p.m.

As the community comes together to celebrate with music, fireworks and patriotism, city leaders are encouraging attendees to stay hydrated, take breaks from the heat and celebrate safely.
