The Alien franchise is alive and well right now, with the recent success of Alien: Romulus and Alien: Earth. The franchise has actually been a great springboard for incredible young directors.
Ridley Scott wasn’t a big name until the first Alien, David Fincher’s first film was Alien 3 and Aliens was the first film James Cameron directed after The Terminator. Fede Alvarez was further along in his career than those filmmakers when he directed Alien: Romulus, but he wants to follow in Cameron and Fincher’s first steps.
What does that mean? It means he’s vowing not to direct another Alien film in the future.
“I don’t think I was ever going to [direct Romulus 2],” Alvarez said at HorrorHound, via Bloody Disgusting. “We always knew right when we finished – this is one of those things where you come in and you do one, and get out. Cameron, Fincher … all those directors I love, they went and did one. Obviously, Ridley created it, he has the right to make a bunch of them.
“We did want to write it. Honestly, it’s because we love the characters we created so we want to make sure no one kills them right at the beginning of the next one. They went and killed Hicks and Newt just like that, hey let’s not let that happen. We wrote it and made sure they stayed alive, and now we can let someone else make it.”
Alvarez’s logic makes a lot of sense. He’s a director with a lot of juice right now, so there’s no reason to commit himself to a franchise that he didn’t even create. It’s unclear who will direct the sequel to Romulus, but it would be fun to give an up-and-coming filmmaker a chance to play in that playground.
